UMG Recordings, Inc. et al v. Kurbanov, et al

Jenner & Block advised Umg Recordings Inc on the dispute.

This appeal concerns whether a defendant, sued by twelve U.S. record companies for alleged copyright infringement, is subject to specific personal jurisdiction in Virginia. The district court, in granting the defendant’s motion to dismiss, concluded that he is not subject to personal jurisdiction in any federal forum.

Plaintiffs are twelve record companies that produce, distribute, and license the majority of commercial sound recordings in the United States. All of them are Delaware companies, with eight having their principal place of business in New York, three in California, and one in Florida.

Defendant is a Russian national living and working in the Russian Federation.
