O’Melveny served as outside counsel to Carolina Panthers (NFL) owner David Tepper in his winning bid for the latest Major League Soccer (MLS) expansion team, which will be based in Charlotte.
In this role, the firm worked closely with Panthers Vice President and General Counsel Steve Argeris.
The new MLS team, which will begin play in the 2021 season at Bank of America Stadium, will be the MLS’s 30th, capping off a period of strategic expansion as soccer’s popularity has exploded across the United States and Canada. Headquartered in New York City, Major League Soccer features 24 clubs throughout the US and Canada, and six more expansion teams—including Charlotte’s—are confirmed to join the league by 2022.
The deal continues an ongoing partnership between Mr. Tepper and O’Melveny. In May 2018, O’Melveny was proud to represent him in his winning bid to purchase the Carolina Panthers, the largest team purchase in NFL history.
The O’Melveny team was led by partners Irwin Raij (Picture) and Chuck Baker, and included counsel Vince Ferrito and Alexander Chester, as well as associate Chris Anderson. Tax partner Alex Anderson also advised on the deal.
