Steven Cohen and Cohen Private Ventures’ $2.4 Billion Acquisition of the Mets

Steven Cohen and Cohen Private Ventures executed the $2.4 billion acquisition of the Mets from Sterling Equities and the Wilpon and Katz families.

The New York Mets are a Major League Baseball team based in New York that competes in the National League East division.

Sterling Equities is a diversified, family-run group of companies focused on holdings in real estate, sports and media, including the New York Mets, SportsNet New York, real estate investment portfolios, related real estate services businesses and private equity.

Mr. Cohen is the founder of the hedge fund Point72 Asset Management and a lifelong Mets fan who previously owned an 8 percent stake in the team. Sterling Equities, co-founded by Fred Wilpon and Saul Katz, is a diversified, family-run group of companies. Its portfolio is focused on holdings in real estate, sports, and media in the New York area.
