Cathay Media and Education Group Inc.’s Listing On The Hong Kong Stock Exchange


Herbert Smith Freehills has advised Macquarie Capital Limited and China Merchants Securities (HK) Co., Limited as joint sponsors of Cathay Media and Education Group Inc.’s mainboard listing on the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong.

Cathay Media and Education Group is one of the pioneers in the private TV programme production industry in China. It operates the Communication University of China, Nanjing, which was ranked first in independent media and arts colleges in China in 2020.

Against the ongoing disruption caused by the pandemic, the company raised approximately HK$1.24 billion, with the listing on 15 July 2020.

Cathay Media and Education Group attracted four cornerstone investors including Orchid Asia, Snow Lake Funds, Foresight Orient Global Superior Choice SPC and Oceanic.

Partners Matt Emsley (Picture), Siddhartha Sivaramakrishnan and Stanley Xie jointly led the team, assisted by senior associates Jin Kong and Yuki Chan, associates Stephanie Chan, Afra Li and Karen Liu in Hong Kong, and associate Sean Ji from Kewei. Hong Kong trainee solicitor Kaiwen Sun and Kewei paralegal Jessica Sun also provided support. Joanna Hu led a joint team from Herbert Smith Freehills and Kewei’s Alternative Legal Services businesses (assisted by Selina Wang, Huan Meng and Yuanyuan Yin) to provide high-efficiency solutions for document-intensive processes during the offering.
